This is a project of editorial design created in collaboration with Ilaria Montanari.
The start point of this project was 4 books created by a group of students of ISAI (Institute of Interior Architecture) in Vicenza during a design course led by professor Riccardo Blumer and Francesco Tencalla.
The books feature various themes related to the earth, communicated through an engaging and experimental approach. All the images used in the layouts have been produced through empirical experiments. The recurring subjects used in most of these experiments were a pan and a heat source, hence the title “What’s boiling in the pan?”.
The first book is titled “Trip on Earth” and attempts to reproduce the plate tectonics occurrence utilising a pan full of water and nail polish. When the water in the pan began boiling, the nail polish was sprinkled inside. The drops of nail polish initially expanded on the liquid surface, then progressively became dense and formed multiple colorful patterns that slowly and regularly moved on the water’s surface.
The second and most conceptual book is titled “The shape of thoughts”. In a pan containing boiling milk they sprinkled a few drops of tempera paint. The hot milk slowly melted the colour forming abstract drawings. This experiment was named the creative dynamic fluid.
The third book titled ‘There was the moon’ narrates the story of the moon. A series of white wax cubes were left to boil in a pan full of water mixed together with blue flakes. During the boiling, the smaller flakes melted colouring the liquified wax, while the bigger flakes stuck to the wax and when the whole piece cooled down the result was a sphere shape of wax with sporadic splashes of colour characterized by an irregular surface which recalls the moon.
Last but not least is a book of recipes titled ‘Edible Universe’. In this book the experiment consisted in artificially recreating a series of natural events as clouds, ice, wind or a star like the sun. In order to perform this experiment, the students used eggs cooked in various ways to obtain images that represented the chosen natural occurrences in the most similar way possible.
